    This place was a surprise. After walking into the Gunflint Tavern and being told the wait for 2 would be 30 mins (even though there were open tables), we decided to walk down the street a bit and into the Crooked Spoon. I'm glad we did. We had the port wine and goat cheese fondue as a starter, then I had the hanger steak, and my girlfriend had the pork tenderloin. All of it was fantastic. My girlfriend doesn't even eat pork that often and loved her dinner. Service was very attentive as well. With the limited dining options in Grand Marais, this should be the top of your list.

    Great alternative to Angry Trout - the menu is varied with lots of options and there are some very creative salad dressings. The crab cakes with the jicama slaw are delicious and a must try, but I'm hesitant to recommend the other seafood options. I love trying steamed mussels as a yardstick for a restaurant and at the Crooked Spoon, they came in a white wine garlic thyme broth. Unfortunately there was a fishy odor which can happen when mussels are not fresh. My second experience with fish was the whitefish, catch of the day - char grilled. Again, too fishy to eat. When I told my server this she responded that no one else had complained about it all day, what did I want her to do? I was taken aback by her disagreeable reaction. At the end of our meal she said that fish item had been taken off our bill which was great customer service. Perhaps the wait staff need specific training on how to respond to customer's specific complaints? Anyway, in spite of the 2 fishy experiences I'd go back here for the warm cozy space and to try the remaining items on the menu; there are a few vegetarian options that look tempting.

    Happy to be back at Crooked Spoon. As good as I remembered. Turkey with Brie sabdwich and rosemary pipcorn was great, as was the Crooked BLT. Definitely a place to eat when in Grand Marais!

    This restaurant was so cute with great I presume local artwork. They had great service and were kind. It's a must to go while your up there. I had the French onion soup and my friend got the pastrami (I think) sandwich and they were both amazing separate and combined

    When I headed to the north shore for a few nights away from the city, I was not seeking culinary delights. However, the food at Crooked Spoon rivaled anything I have found in Minneapolis. Everything was fresh, creative, and full of flavor. And, they do not rely on grease or sugar to make meals taste good. I was so happy with my sandwich and salad that I ended up returning to the Crooked Spoon the next day, something that I rarely do on a vacation. *Also, the server, Nikki, was incredibly nice and gave excellent recommendations for hikes to try during out stay.

    In my personal opinion, the Crooked Spoon Cafe is the best sit-down restaurant in Grand Marais. The food is flavorful, original, seasonal and beyond delicious! Price: Lunch - $9-$10. Dinner - $18-$24. Kids - $5.95 per person. Prices vary and are subject to change. Ambiance: Darkly lit yet welcoming, cozy and laid back Menu: A wonderful American menu providing diners with just the "right" amount of options. Diners will leave here satisfied and overcome with a case of pregnant lady like cravings. -Lunch: Sandwiches, Burgers, Salads & Soups. The BLT was phenomenal! The rye bread is crisp, perfectly cooked bacon and the cucumber curry mayo was a nice addition to the sandwich.The Rabbit Burger has officially been added to my favorite burger list! The rabbit meat is juicy and tastes like a mix between chicken and Italian sausage.The burger is topped with heavenly salami and cheese that bring the burger to the next level of awesomeness. -Dinner: Seafood, Meat, Pasta, Salads & Soups I highly suggest ordering the sea scallops or the pork chop. The meat is seasoned well, cooked beautifully and easy to cut into. Extra bonus points for the crispy bacon cabbage saute that comes with the pork chop entree!     Simple review: The lamb meatballs are excellent! I had the salmon and it was perfect! Shared French onion soup and is a must try! Great atmosphere - Very friendly and fast staff! Give it a try!

    I ate here once after a drive up the north shore, and I was unfortunately disappointed. There was a special that day of a rack of alpaca, and I thought "why not" because how often does one get to eat alpaca. Bad move on my part. It was a horrible cut of meat, very sinewy with lots of chewy tendon and/or ligaments holding it to the bone. I had this image in my head that an alpaca died of old age and they got a discount on it. I suppose I could have asked for something else, but I was hungry. The portion of food was actually pretty substantial, but I'm a quality over quantity person. Overall, I hear it's a good place to eat, but I didn't have a good experience.

    Others have written pretty much what I'd say: excellent food, decent prices, terrific service. I ate lunch there recently because I saw they were serving carrot cake that day, so guess what I had for dessert? Yup, and it was worth every bite. The only thing this restaurant doesn't have is the view that Angry Trout has.

    In a word: SUPERB! Or maybe DELECTABLE! Wonderful experience in the center of Grand Marais. I started with crab cakes served with a snappy and citrusy cole slaw...slightly spicy and very good. Partner had a bowl of potato blue cheese soup - perfect flavor with subtle (not over powering) blue chesse - he could have had more! I had fresh lake trout with a cornmeal dusting and then sautéed. Served with an earthy and hearty side of wild rice and percect green beans. Scrumptious! But partners dish was the highlight - charbroiled ribeye steak that was north of 16 ounces and nearly two inches thick. It was cooked to mouth watering perfection and served with buttermilk mashed potatoes and broccolini. It was spendy at $29 but worth every penny! Total tab of just under $100 and great bang for the buck...and a very full tummy

    Amazingly good food, cozy ambiance. Real treat in such a touristy town. We came in right a noon on a busy day in town and got a table for 5 immediately. Had a full kids menu that didn't limit itself to just the basics. Our kids chose the pizza, which was excellent, but the next table over had a tasty-looking grilled chicken on a skewer. Nice alternative to the ubiquitous breaded chicken tenders. We adults had a delicious fresh-caught Lake Superior whitefish sandwich and what was one of the best hamburgers we ever had. Even the rosemary popcorn they served instead of fries was tasty. Good service as well. We would definitely eat here again.

    OK - I had pretty low expectations for my food experience when we decided to go up north to celebrate my hubby's 60th birthday. The food we'd eaten was alright. The Angry Trout and Crooked Spoon Cafe are the exceptions. We found Crooked Spoon through the Yelp app, as we were looking for a place to eat on our last Sunday evening at the shore. It seems that most everything is just closed, so our options were limited. I looked at CSC's website and found it interesting and the kids' options were pretty good, as well. So, we decided to take a chance. Now, if only our Powerball picks were this successful. CSC is a great restaurant! I got the ribs, my husband got the pork chop, and my son had the kids' pizza. It takes a lot to impress me, and I am still thinking about that meal we had. The ribs were amazingly tender and some of the most delicious ribs I've ever had. The house-made barbecue sauce was a perfect match to the ribs, and I found it difficult to stop eating the mashed potatoes. The pork chop was equally amazing, and the polenta with which it was served could have come from an Italian restaurant. There is a place in the TC that makes a polenta that we consciously avoid because it's just bad. Since we've not been there in awhile, I won't name them until I return. The boy ate his pizza in about three bites. Not because it was small, it was just that good. He's at an age where gobbling food is the best indication of how much he likes it. He said that he'd eat that pizza anytime. Before I forget, we started our meal with CSC's crab cake. Damn, such a good thing! Again, it didn't taste like something prepared in Minnesota. I'd love to have one right now. If you're in Grand Marais and looking for a place to eat that takes a "leave the beaten path" approach to food, then Crooked Spoon Cafe is definitely where you'll want to eat.

    We stopped in randomly on a very chilly afternoon. Ordered the specials: butternut squash soup and the hard salami and gruyere sandwich. It was delicious. One of the best sandwiches I've had in some time. the rest of the menu items looked equally as good. Definitely worth a visit.

    Had lunch here and was so impressed we came back for dinner. We met some friends and we were all so happy we were sharing bites around the table. Best find of our trip and best surprise in an area where most of the restaurants aren't stellar. Go here. You don't need to know what we ordered. Everything is delicious. Get in your car and go here now. That is all

    We stopped here for desert and a glass of wine to conclude the night. The place is warm and welcoming if maybe a bit dark. The dessert we had were good. I also ate almost all of the coffee ice cream that came with my molten cake and I don't even like coffee! BF had the banana foster and liked it. We both had a glass of port and it was pretty good. We saw a lot of good food going around and it was very inviting. Next time we will have to come for a full meal. Might make it our nice night out when we head back North

    One of the unfortunate things about loving good food is the potential for overindulgence when you find a that special something. A late lunch at the Gunflint Tavern coupled with an early dinner at the Crooked Spoon put me in just that position on our recent trip to the North Shore. To go a little easy on myself I ordered an appetizer and a salad. The hope that I would have room to sample the vanilla bean crème brûlé for dessert went out the window when the blue crab cakes with firecracker jicama slaw and cilantro oil arrived. While there is plenty in this appetizer to share at a table of 4, I devoured the whole thing... slaw and all. Amazing. Next came the watermelon and arugula salad, which is probably the best salad I've ever had anywhere. Topped with braised pork belly, pickled red onions, crumbled blue cheese and extra virgin olive oil... how can you go wrong? (Even the portion I couldn't finish and refrigerated in our hotel overnight was amazing the next day.) Crooked Spoon was my #1 choice of places to try for a couple reasons... namely yelp reviews and an inventive bistro menu. Plus the pictures on their website told the story that this would be my kind of place, and wouldn't you know... it was. The only regret I have is that we didn't have more time to space out our meals. But if you were to ask me what my #1 recommendation would be in town for a nice dinner - this is the place. My only slight complaint is that while the interior finishes are beautiful, there are too many hard surfaces and the atmosphere can be a bit noisier than you'd hope for as an accompaniment for this kind of meal. But that's very easy to overlook because the food and service here eclipse any minor complaints I could have.

    Overall this place was really good. We started with the lamb meatballs and they were damn delicious... bravo on the sauce. Their selection of tap beers wasn't extensive but getting a couple fresh pints of Bent Paddle is hard to find in the Twin Cities, so cheers to that. I also had the best French Onion soup I've ever had in my life. My wife had very good poached pear salad with dried cherries and goat cheese. The food overall was inspired and delicious. The service was a little awkward and at times kinda stuffy but overall timely and mostly pleasant. It seemed almost as if the ownership was trying to impress with the classic "fine-dining" tone. Nice restaurants don't have to have pretentious service... It'd be nice to see someone break the mold on that one of these days. The food was more than enough to impress.

    Yummy !!!! We loved this place! The atmosphere is lovely, slightly dark, and warm feeling. The french onion soup was good, and the grilled chicken sandwich was delicious! The server was very nice. This was the first time we've Been here, but we will be back for sure! The Crooked Spoon is a new favorite stop in Grand Maris.

    Decent - above average. This place presents well, the food presents well, it offers a nice balance - not too formal, not too casual. The menu offers some unusual and interesting options. But all of the food was just a touch "too" something: the shrimp were a little too tough, the risotto was a little too salty, the rhubarb pie was a little too sweet. It all was still good, but not quite excellent. And it was pretty expensive, even for Grand Marais. We'd go back, but it won't be first on our list.

    Seriously I love this place. This is one of the top places I recommend people to check out in GM. I feel like you can't beat the dinner salad (with any of their homemade salad dressings) with a grilled chicken breast for the price of roughly $9.00. It is the ideal meal for a town that is often very pricey. And if that salad isn't what your craving they have an crazy good poached pear salad with so much goat cheese (but really just the right amount), dried cherries, and walnuts in a balsamic dressing. Seriously eat this salad and be happy! I recommend you check out this place for lunch especially! Amazing food that I think almost everyone will love at a fairly reasonable price. When I was there having lunch with my mom last week a table was actually out loud ohhing and ahhing about a item that was brought to the table because it was so pretty but also tasted sooo good! The lunch is well thought out sandwiches, soups and salads. The sandwiches are served as an option with seasoned popcorn...I think this is cool. Dinner becomes a more elaborate affair. Everything is really well thought out and delish though at a higher price 18-20 dollars for an entree. They also have super quality appetizers that probably could be shared as an entree for lunch or even dinner in some cases. I had scallops here for v-day that I can't stop talking about. They were in this amazing citrus beur blanc sauce that just stole my heart...which is a pretty good thing to do on valentines day! My boyfriend had some exotic meat that he also was super enamored with. Good job Crooked Spoon Chefs! There deserts are sometimes a bit off for me. Maybe it is just how they combine things as I like the idea of the individual components but together it at times seems a bit off to me. But maybe just have a glass of port or wander over to sydneys for custard instead. I wish I had some local discount or something to eat there even more often!

    We are traveling up to Gunflint MD, and stopped in Grand Marais for a couple of nights. We got a recommendation from the front desk to have dinner at the Crooked Spoon. From the outside, this restaurant looks like a coffee shop from the 70's era. The interior was also rather subdued, yet very comfortable. Don't let this fool you. We left on food cloud 9! Started by splitting a salad of port wine and spice poached pears, cherries, walnuts and goat cheese. It was a perfect combination of ingredients, and every bite brought a burst of different flavor. I opted to have this with the fondue of apples, grilled kielbasa, and baguette. It arrived beautifully with a candle heated cheese cup in the center of the other items. It was delicious. The kielbasa was fire grilled perfectly, with a lightly crisp on the outside. My partner choose the scallop entree, and was so impressed with the sauce and seafood risotto that it came with, that he insisted I try some of it. It WAS awesome. Since we are on a (on going health) diet, we have sworn off restaurant desserts. After having these two delicious meals, we decided to put in some extra hours of exercise, and try out the Banana Brule, splitting it between us. We were not disappointed. The dish's description is: banana rum, caramel sauce, vanilla bean ice cream, cashew brittle, with Maldon sea salt. Our first spoonful convinced us that this was one of the greatest, if not the best, desserts we ever tasted. The sauce, vanilla ice cream and cashew brittle complimented the banana which also had a thin shell of crispy caramel on it. The salt, (which we initially questioned) was the "magic on the cake"! As seasoned travelers, we love to try out different restaurants where ever we go. The Crooked Spoon had some of the best presented, most flavorful dishes we have ever experienced. Our server explained to us that her son was the chef and owner, and enjoyed stepping out of the box. Well, he accomplished this with the dishes we tasted, and we will be back there tomorrow.

    This is the best place to eat on the North north of Duluth. The octopus and chorizo appetizer is fantastic. We were lucky that the herring sandwich was the lunch special. It is really good. Beer and wine selections are very good as well. Great service. Our experience was so good we returned for dinner. Pork belly appetizer is really good. We ordered the scallops for the entree and it was a great choice. Scallops melted in your mouth. Stop in you will be very pleased.

    My husband and I came here for lunch on a Sunday (it's closed Monday and Tuesday). We were pretty surprised to see an octopus appetizer in Grand Marais but took a chance. Wow! It was perfectly cooked, not a bit rubbery, and served on a bed of some kind of delicious chorizo concoction that complemented it perfectly. My husband got a cornmeal-crusted herring sandwich. The fish was flaky, moist, and mild, and it was served on a ciabatta roll with aioli with potato wedges as an accompaniment. I had a pastrami and gruyere sandwich, also on ciabatta. It was kind of like a Reuben but not quite--I called it Reubenesque, and it was so hearty and delicious that I will be more Reubenesque myself for having eaten it. I couldn't resist trying the rosemary popcorn to go with the sandwich. I never would have expected it but it was delicious. I tried to reverse engineer how they made it so I can reproduce it at home. Unfortunately we were too full for dessert, but we will be sure to come back and give it a try. The restaurant occupies a storefront on Grand Marais' main street. The decor is simple and warm, and service was friendly and attentive. Prices were reasonable; our lunch came to about $40 with tip.

    My husband and I came here for our anniversary dinner, and asked if we could bring a bottle of wine from our honeymoon in with us. The restaurant said of course, and charged a small corkage fee. That really made our evening special. This place always has a long wait in the summer, so we came in about 6:15 to put our name on the list, expecting to eat around 7:15. This night was no different and we were told there was about an hour wait. We were very excited to learn that there is a new lounge upstairs for folks waiting for tables. This is a big improvement to the little bar in the main dining area. We were able to open our wine and have a wonderful appetizer (manchego, warm olives and a baguette) while we waited for our table. As soon as we had finished our app, our table was ready and we moved back downstairs for dinner. My husband had the flank steak and I had the ribs and both are cooked perfectly. I especially enjoyed the carmelization in the sweet potatoes and the spice in the ribs - lots of cumin so they had kind of a middle eastern flare. The service was welcoming and accommodating and we will be back every time we are in Grand Marais.

    I would go back here in a heartbeat, wish I lived closer to this gem-of-a-place! Honestly, so quaint, delicious food, and nestled in the adorable town of Grand Marais. This charming place is run by a husband and wife team who loves to incorporate local and seasonal flavors into every dish. They have a great local beer list-- with many selections from all across Minnesota. Their menu is great to share as well. We started with the roasted beet & duck w/ homemade ricotta, and then the French onion soup which is A MUST (hello puff pastry on top!). And our fish of the night was incredible, with a side of mashed potatoes & roasted broccolini. Can't wait to return soon-- until next time!

    Very impressive little joint. The BLT is terrific, even sans mayo (they have some special mayo that's probably great if you like mayo). I got the spicy slaw on the side, and it is indeed spicy and delicious. The salmon rillette was a huge hit, as was the famous French Onion soup. The service is a bit inattentive, but aside from that it's a winner.

    This place is on the main drag in Grand Marais. Looks nice enough on the outside... kind of quaint. The looks belie the quality of the food coming out of the kitchen. It's truly excellent. I had the flat iron steak. The steak was perfectly cooked and the demiglace sauce was excellent. The roast cauliflower was great and I don't typically like cauliflower. My wife's sea scallops were among the best she ever ate and the peach pie was superb. There was a 30 minute wait for a table' which we spent in the roof top bar sampling the excellent beer list. There are about 8 craft beers from around Minnesota.

    If you walk around the back there's a cupola-style bar upstairs that is very nice with good views of the harbor. Excellent beers and a creative appetizer menu. Very nice little place.

    Stopped for lunch while in town and this little gem will be added to our rotation when in the area. Root beer lady root beer is no Sprechers, but supports the cause so try one. Had fish sandwhich which was herring today. Got the pan fried corn meal breaded and it was outstanding. Liked the dill chips as well. Better half had the pastrami sandwich which was they rocked. Better than some NY delis. Great flavor and not propped up by undue saltiness. The banana Brule was out of sight. Worth coming back for on its own. Keep up the good work!

    I recently stopped here after coming out of the BWCA. The French onion soup came highly recommended from the outfitter that we rented our canoe from. And they were spot on. If you only get one thing in Grand Marais, please get the French onion soup here. I've eaten all over the world, and this is bar far the best French Onion soup I've ever experienced in my life. The presentation is beautiful, with a filo dough type crust. Hot, steamy, perfectly salted... perfect for a cold day after getting out of the BWCA. Two thumbs up and 5 stars for the soup alone.

    This restaurant is absolutely spectacular in so many ways. An emphasis on fresh food, local/regional, and organic. The ingredients all seem like they are hand-picked! The setting is a cozy little narrow space right in the heart of Grand Marais. The prices are a steal for the quality, quantity and thoughtfulness of preparation and execution - each entree would easily be an extra $5 in Minneapolis, as this would be a highly sought-after restaurant for the dishes & their concept. The smoked salmon rillettes were exception - the smoky flavor was not overwhelming, just enough salt and the the bread was fresh and satisfying. The roasted wild mushrooms were not like anything I had. They look like they had literally been harvested front he woods - I do not know what variety they were, but were white & in larger clumps together. The romesco type sauce was splendid - I could have eaten that on bread as is! Well done on the appetizers, kept my anxious for my meal. The steak for $29 was mouth-watering. I must say, it was done an extra-step well than we had asked, but still was tender & juicy and delicious. There was quite a bit of fat around the edges to cut off. The mashed potatoes also were rich, creamy & buttery. Just a superb plate for a very humble price. The homemade pappardelle pasta with gulf shrimp, basil & fresh tomatoes was deliciously summery. The pasta itself was not light, but the tomato sauce was - but not a rich sauce, they do not add cream or many other ingredients. It is a very fresh & basic sauce. The shrimp were generous, 5 large shrimp and the dish was $19. I would have loved more basil - that was a bit sparse, and one of my favorite flavors in pasta. The staff was attentive and friendly. Everyone else at the table loved their dishes and there is a little bit of everything on the menu, pork, lamb, steak, seafood, vegetarian, chicken. It would be crazy if you were disappointed, this is high quality food and very chef-driven. Reservations are only taken for parties of 6 or more for dinner, and this place is popular with locals & tourists alike, so be prepared to wait on weekends if you arrive at prime-time.

    Every once in a while you travel to the ends of the earth and find treasure. Grand Marais, MN, is not quite the end of the earth, but the Crooked Spoon is definitely a treasure. The restaurant is warm and inviting. Owned and operated by a husband and wife team, we were greeted at the door by the wife, who showed us to a small bar while our table was made ready. A nice selection of local seasonal beer was available on tap and a very pleasant waitstaff takes care of whatever you need. For appetizers, we had roasted wild mushrooms and krispy kale with a red chile romescu (kind of like pesto). This was amazingly good, as was the warm sourdough bread served along side. For dinner, we had grass fed steak and baby back ribs. The steak came with roasted potatoes, grean beans, and a port demiglace. Perfectly done and very nice. The ribs, though, were outstanding. The meat was tender, fell off the bone and was finished in a homemade coffee barbecue sauce that was not too strongly coffee-flavored and caramelized perfectly on the ribs. Ancho sweet potatoes and crispy kale finished off the plate. In a lifetime of loving bbq, these may have been some of the best baby back ribs I have ever had. Dark chocolate peanut Semifredo and vanilla creme brule finished off the meal. All of this was washed down with a lovely Washington State pinot noir. The Crooked Spoon has quite an extensive wine list with a little something for everyone. Overall, this was a great dining experience from start to finish. If you find yourself way up in this neck of the woods, the Crooked Spoon is a must-try.

    Same owners but quality in cooking was a disappointment. We were so excited to return - scallops with corn hominy were cooked perfectly but sand crunchiness kinda ruined it. My husband ordered the rib eye special - asked for medium rare but came out well. If you like your steak med rare a well done - as in over cooked - is a bummer and a waste of $30 bucks. It was great that the waitress asked how the steak was cooked and I was shocked that my never complaining husband actually said it was i overcooked - nice she asked of she could do anything- my husband i am too hungry - the misstep for me was the restaurant actually did nothing?! The carrot cake - from off premises - is great - creme brûlée - made on premises- was too thick - disappointing. The flik coffee is great and locally brewed. Writing this in hopes the chef/owner reads how bummed out we were - off night perhaps?! Willing to check out again
